Casa Ceibo has always been 100 percent committed to the reforestation of the mangroves and has an actual restored mangrove project located on the hotel property.
Once prolific and healthy throughout the waterway region that buttresses Casa Ceibo, the threatened mangroves play a key role in protecting and enhancing other aspects of the environment and wildlife. They buffer inland waterways from salinity, improve the stability, growth and sedimentation of the coastal lands, boost the functionality of the estuary food chain, and preserve biodiversity. The mangroves are an extraordinary treasure that must be safeguarded at all costs.
Casa Ceibo has an agreement with the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador to allow for a reforestation study to be conducted on the mangroves on Casa Ceibo’s property. The university’s marine biology students have assisted in managing the work, which has led to the planting of 2,000 mangroves already. A second phase of this project, which will use the results to develop deforestation-prevention measures, is already underway.
Casa Ceibo guests may partake in the hotel’s reforestation efforts in two ways. They may plant a mangrove seed on the property and/or travel to nearby Isla Corazón, where all island visitors are actually required to plant a mangrove seed as part of the conservation efforts. Local guides will provide instructions and teach interested Casa Ceibo guests where and how to do this.
