The unforgettable Casa Ceibo Boutique Hotel & Spa sits on the outskirts of Bahía de Caráquez. For centuries, this historic, coastal city has played an important role in Ecuadorian culture and commerce. Called “Bahía” by the locals, the sandy peninsula is home to approximately 30,000 residents, who represent an intriguing mix of South Americans who've consistently shared their strong ties to the land and water throughout many generations.
With the Pacific Ocean bordering its western edge, and stretches of sandy beaches that lure visitors and locals alike, Bahía has become an exotic tourist destination in recent years. What's more, Bahía is Ecuador’s only, official "Eco-City," a title that’s been bestowed to the mini-metropolis for its efforts in conservation and environmentally sound practices.
Casa Ceibo guests are encouraged to explore Bahía at their leisure, visiting the city on their own or by making arrangements with one of the hotel’s bilingual guides.
Touring About Bahía
It’s great to start a day in Bahía at the Central Bank Museum of Archeology and History. Packed with archeological artifacts, this national museum boasts the country’s most complete showcase of how this specific area, its people and the culture have evolved, often adapting to catastrophic events, ethnic overthrows, the ebb and flow of prosperity, and its role within Ecuadorian society. The Central Bank Museum houses life-size exhibits portraying the seafaring ways of Bahía, plus an active, archeological research center, permanent visual arts exhibits, and visiting exhibits. Here, the highly coveted Spondylus shell, which was aggressively traded in pre-Hispanic society, is on display.
Bahía is well known for a handful of interesting landmarks: the lighthouse, Indian Park, The Cross overlooking the city, and Bello Hoizonte, San Roque (Bahía’s oldest house). Peurto Amistad (“Friendship Harbor”) is a fun place to hear the waves slap against the docks while learning why Bahía was such an important fishing port up until the mid-1900s. It’s also a recommended spot for lunch, serving up the day’s fresh catch and offering a glimpse into the local sailing community and Bahía’s modern maritime life.
Hopping into an Eco-Taxi, a human-powered tricycle transport, Casa Ceibo guests can take in Bahía’s sights and sounds, as well as get an overview of the city’s main attractions and neighborhoods. After shuttling about the town, its fun to round out the hour-long tour to sample fresh coconut ice cream from a vendor's cart, stroll Bahía’s shores (tides permitting), or browse downtown to shop for souvenirs — handmade jewelry, crafts, ceramics and more.
Just Beyond Bahía...
Bahía is the official gateway to adventure travel within the Manabí region. It’s a launch pad for countless excursions in exotic nature, everything from whale watching to deep-sea fishing, boating, hiking, bird watching and much, much more. It’s also the best starting point for visiting some of the area’s most famous attractions, including nearby Cerro Seco National Park and a handful of archeological sites. All these activities and local hotspots are just part of what makes the Casa Ceibo experience unforgettable.
