Casa Ceibo starts its city tour of Bahía de Caráquez with a drive to Puerto Amistad (“Friendship Harbor”). Here, the bay waves slap against the docks as our guests hear about what was Ecuador’s most important fishing port until the mid-1900s. Bahía’s lighthouse provides the perfect vantage point for viewing the city and coast, as well as understanding more about this region’s relationship with the great Pacific Ocean, its role within major South American trading routes, and Bahía’s significance as a beachfront destination.
Indian Park, another stopping point, presents an opportunity to learn about the pre-Hispanic “Los Caras” culture, and tales of Bahía’s recent past and present, including its newfound popularity with Ecuadorian officials and status as the country’s only “Eco-city.” Other trip highlights include riding about in an “Eco-Taxi,” visiting Bello Horizonte, San Roque (Bahía’s oldest house), and the Mountain Cross, another famous Bahía landmark.
