Archeological Attractions

Casa Ceibo guests are always surprised to learn that Ecuador’s third largest archeological museum is just a few minutes’ drive from the hotel’s doorstep. Packed with archeological artifacts — tools, weapons, jewelry, sacred relics — the Central Bank Museum of Archeology in Bahía de Caráquez boasts the country’s most complete showcase of how this area, its people and the culture have evolved, often adapting to catastrophic events, ethnic overthrows, the ebb and flow of prosperity, and its role within Ecuadorian society. The Central Bank Museum houses life-size exhibits portraying the seafaring ways of Bahía, plus an active, archeological research center, permanent visual arts exhibits, and visiting exhibits. Here, the highly coveted Spondylus shell, which was aggressively traded in pre-Hispanic society, is on display.

Within Manabí, there are numerous archeological sites, as well as interesting places that have important ties to the region’s ancient past. It’s helpful to visit the Central Bank Museum of Archeology before heading out to any of these historic attractions. Casa Ceibo is centrally located close to five nearby sites — Japotó, San Isidro, Portovelo, San Vicente, Chirije. Each offers a fascinating peek and perspective into a number of Ecuador’s bygone eras, anywhere from 3,500 to 40 million years ago. The excursions are special trips, which must be arranged with This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it in advance and upon request.
